The endemic Ngutu pare Wrybill is a taonga treasure. This little grey bird is smaller than a Tuturiwhatu NZ Dotterel and migrates from the Canterbury braided rivers during breeding season to the Manukau and Pūkorokoro estuaries during winter.  With it’s right-curved bill and stunning murmurations, it captivates everyone who watches it. Here on the Tīkapa Moana we host almost half the 5,500 population in winter! Where else in the world can you see half an entire population of any species?
